Chapter 5

Lenchester to Houston.

Three hours.

You would think somewhere in that three-hour drive that the rain would cease, right? Or slow down, you know, give a girl driving a giant freaking truck a break?

Nope.

I slowed down as I drew closer to my exit. At least, I assumed I was closer because that’s what the navigation on my phone said but to be honest, I hadn’t seen the road name or exit number on the last sign because of the sheets of rain hammering my windshield. The wipers were turned on as high as they could go, like warp speed and about to fly off the truck fast, yet the water beating down in front of me made seeing out nearly impossible.

Flicking my blinker on, I slowly took the exit. In my side mirror, I noticed another car as it cut through the traffic two lanes over, heedless of the rain, and sped toward me so quickly that I worried they would either try to pass me on the exit ramp or run into my rear end. I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, tensing up.

By some miracle, they managed to slow down without causing an accident although I noticed they were hugging my bumper so tight I almost lost sight of them several times before the stop sign. The only thing that made me notice them through the thick curtain of rain was the fact that one headlight shined a bright blueish color and the other was barely visible, a pathetic dot of yellow light coming from the left side headlight.

The helpful Australian voice on the GPS said something hard to hear over the rain and forced my attention back to the screen. Yes, I probably should have switched it back to a voice without an accent for this trip but I loved Australian and forgot until it was too late anyway.

I squinted through the rain at my surroundings and noticed a large gas station not far down the road to the right of the intersection. The need to stretch my muscles and take a bathroom break hit me like a ton of bricks so, ignoring the demands of my navigation to reroute, I pulled into the pumps around the side of the building and relaxed. Safely tucked under the awning, I set the parking brake and breathed a sigh of relief that I could see something besides rain at last. As I stepped out, I noticed the car with the funky headlights whiz by and pull into a spot by the gas station doors. If they were needing the bathroom too that slightly explained their erratic driving and rush to exit the interstate.

Of course, I couldn’t exactly pull an eighteen-wheeler into a tiny spot near the door so now I would have to brave the flood to get from the gas pumps to the gas station itself and go inside. That was fine, though.
